Liberty and Justice For All

The Pledge of Allegiance was written 130 years ago in 1887 and included the famous line “With Liberty and Justice For All.” Sadly many Americana didn’t believe it back then and a growing number of Americans don’t today. We now have many Nazi’s in our country and just as we did in the late 1930’s, we are turning our heads and ignoring the fact that these Nazi’s are trying to take away the rights of people they do not agree with.

The difference is that it’s not 1939, and these people aren’t living in Germany listening to Adolph Hitler. They are living in every city in our great nation. They walk next to us at the park, they buy their groceries where we do, they live across the street and sadly they attend our churches. And what do we do? The same thing we did in the 1930’s when rumors of the atrocities reached our shores…..absolutely nothing.

The media was outraged when our president didn’t condemn the white supremacists in Charlottesville this weekend. In fact he placed the blame firmly on the shoulders of everyone. He has always been so quick to voice his displeasure on everything else he hates. The cast of Hamilton. The media. James Comey. The Russian investigation. The people that didn’t vote for him. Women. Disabled journalists. The list is too long to include everything he won’t tolerate. The one thing he will tolerate? Violence and murder from the white supremists who are supported by David Duke and voted for Trump.

David Duke said this weekend that these hate-filled Nazi’s were helping to make Donald Trump’a campaign promise come true. These white supremists had heard Trump say for two years that “We will take our country back” and they were merely helping him fulfill his promise to the world. I have never been more ashamed of my country and its leaders.

Back in the late 1930’s, communication was very limited and controlled by our government so it is somewhat understandable that we as Americans didn’t rush initially to defend the millions of Jews being exterminated during the Holocaust in Germany. But what excuse do we have today? With the internet and social media providing instant coverage of the horrific crimes in Portland and Charlottesville, we do absolutely nothing.

We go to church and do our pastors shout out “No more violence! No more intolerance of people of  different religions!” No more racism! No more injustice for blacks being jailed for crimes that whites don’t get charged for?” “No more hate!” Sadly most churches do not say a word. Our Congress does not say a word. Our teachers do not say a word. And our president blames it on everyone, I guess that even the people who were killed and injured were at fault. The governor of Virginia, Terry McAuliffe, stood up proudly and said, “Go home. You are not wanted in this great commonwealth. You pretend that you are patriots, but you are anything but patriots.” He went on to blame President Trump for the growing hatred in our country as a result of how Trump encited his supporters on the campaign trail, promising them he would “Take this great Nation back.”

Our leaders are failing all of us. They need to follow the example of Terry McAuliffe and be unafraid of how the voters will react, or the church congregation or how their students might react. As President Ronald Reagan once said, “The greatest leader is not necessarily the one who does the greatest things. He is the one that gets the people to do the greatest things.”

It is time for our leaders to help us become united for one sole purpose of wanting liberty and justice for all. We need to act swiftly and stand up to support all people of different colors. religions and sexual preferences. Our country’s founding fathers would be so ashamed that everything they worked tirelessly on to protect all American citizens, has withered away. That our current leaders could care less about individual freedoms or the choice to practice any religion.  Our president has tried to restrict Muslims from entering our country, judging all of them based on a few crimes committed by a very small group of radical Islamists.

It is time to take our country back. We must organize and stand in unity against racism and hate. You must let your voice be heard and vote out of office, all of these so-called leaders that engage the Nazi’s. I expect better from ourselves and our leaders.
