Music Calms the Savage Beast

Have you ever noticed that the minute you hear your favorite song, your shoulders relax a bit and your mind stops swirling around?  It can fill our hearts with joy even in our darkest moments in life. The word “music” comes from the word “Muse,” which means to think of, or to sit and meditate and wonder upon or gaze.  That perfectly describes how I feel when I listen to music…..any type, any time, any place.  I can be in a grumpy mood and my world becomes happy when the first notes enter my head.  Music has the ability to calm our heartbeat, change our mood and put a smile on our face.

The expression of “Music Calms the Savage Beast, is from a play written in 1697 from Act 1, Scene 1 of the Mourning Bride.  The phrase also refers to the Tasmanian Devil that appeared only 5 times in Looney Tunes cartoons almost 60 years ago.  He was also referred to as “Taz” or “Taz Boy” and was a very aggressive beast.

Doesn’t this character resemble the demons that hover around us every day?  Trying to keep us from pursuing our hopes, our dreams, and the things we are passionate about?  Listening to music will change our moods and have a positive effect on everything we do.  From dancing with our kids and grandkids and watching their utter joy and happiness, to the quiet time of reflection while reading a book or working on a project. Music not only “Calms the Savage Beast”, it can make us feel alive and energized so we can push those demons aside for another day and we can climb our mountains once again.

I love Blues, Jazz, Classic Rock, Rock, Pop and Christian Rock.  It doesn’t matter what kind of music moves your soul, just turn it on and let it shake, rattle and roll your life!

One lovely inspirational song is called, “The Maker.”  I have included part of the lyrics from Chris August’s song below:

  The Maker
I see You in the sunrise.
I see You in the rain.
I see You in the laugher.
I feel You through the pain.

Everything that You have made so beautiful
Oh, my God, I can’t believe my eyes.
But in all of this to think that You would think of me makes my heart come alive.

Your love is like a mighty fire deep inside my bones.  I feel like I could climb a thousand mountains all at once.  And I never have to wonder if somebody cares for me.  I love the Maker and the Maker loves me.

Rejoice Today!
